Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones

April 24, 1790 – May 30, 1858, A Commodore in the U.S Navy, Jones received bogus information that the United States was at war with Mexico. Acting on this information on October 19, 1842, he sailed into Monterey and raised the American flag, occupying Mexico for the United States. Realizing his mistake, two days later he lowered the US flag, withdrew occupation and sailed out of Monterey.
