Custom House Museum

Custom House Plaza
The oldest government building in California (dating to the 1820s), the Custom House exhibits the goods brought to California in the 1800s by trading sea captains. The Custom House appears today as if a ship has just left the harbor after offloading its 19th century cargo. Admission: Free.
Pacific House Museum

Built in 1847, today this adobe, located near Fisherman’s Wharf, houses an exciting and interactive museum of Monterey History, giving a fascinating overview of Monterey’s most historic buildings. On the second floor, the Pacific House also houses the comprehensive collection of the Monterey Museum of the American Indian. Free.

This museum houses an in-depth collection of maritime artifacts, with a particular focus on Monterey’s shipping, whaling, and sardine industries. In the upstairs gallery you’ll find fine art by Monterey artists and the Jo Mora collection (Carmel’s famed cowboy artist). Admission: Free.

This museum has two locations with a permanent collection devoted to California art, contemporary art, photography, and Asian art. Colton Hall Museum

The historic site of California’s Constitutional Convention in 1849, Colton Hall returns you to the beginning of California’s statehood. Artifacts reflect the many ways that Colton Hall served the community, including serving as a school to some of Monterey’s earliest children. Admission: Free.

Built in the 1840s by Joseph Boston, this building is also known as the “Casa del Oro” (House of Gold) since miners reportedly stored their gold on the premises in Mr. Boston’s safe. Today this gem of a shop sells items reminiscent of old California.

“Homes from the Past” is a self-guided tour of several of Monterey’s most interesting and beautiful homes representing a variety of architectural styles and tasteful interiors.
