ART
Artists of every bent — sculptors, painters in oil and watercolor, photographers and craftspeople — are irresistibly drawn to Monterey, its neighboring towns, its land and seascapes. The roster of artists who have lived and worked here is impressive: photographers Ansel Adams and Edward, Cole and Brett Weston; painters Armin Carl Hansen, William Ritschel, Francis McComas and E. Charlton Fortune; sculptor Jo Mora, creator of the monumental bronze sarcophagus of Father Serra in Carmel Mission; even cartoonist Hank Ketcham, whose pen brought to life Dennis the Menace (and whose vision created a playground for kids at El Estero Park).
This artistic tradition continues, with the studios of hundreds of working artists scattered around the county. Many are members of the Carmel Art Association, which holds regular exhibitions of its members' artwork; others participate in the annual Artists-Equity studio tour. Both the CAA and the Old Monterey Business Association hold Plein Air (open air) painting competitions.
There are, of course, dozens of galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea, but some of the area’s best collections are in Monterey. Monterey Museum of Art has two galleries, the main building on Pacific Street, and the La Mirada Gallery, housed in part in a vintage adobe. The Monterey History & Art Association also has two venues for arts and crafts devotees: Casa Serrano, displaying artworks with a Monterey connection in an 1845 adobe, and the Historic Costume Collection in Perry-Downer House. The City of Monterey maintains a revolving exhibition space at the Alvarado Gallery in the Monterey Conference Center, and has designed an “Art Walk” to help visitors find their way between one art hot-spot and another.
