Jules Simoneau,
seen here in this c. 1899 photo, was a restauranteur and
saloonkeeper who befriended Robert Louis Stevenson when
the young writer visited Monterey in 1879. The two remained
lifelong friends. Monterey's present-day transit center
is named "Simoneau Plaza" in his honor.
