Monterey History and Art Association’s 86th Annual La Merienda!
June 3, 2017
11:15 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Memory Garden, 20 Custom House Plaza, Monterey
The community is invited to celebrate the 86th Annual Monterey History and Art La Merienda and the City of Monterey’s 247th birthday with a very special barbecue buffet extravaganza, with entertainment by Mike Marotta, Jr. & special guests, mariachis, and folklorico dancers, and a festive “Californio” party in the historic Memory Garden on Custom House Plaza on Saturday, June 4, 2016. La Merienda (Spanish word for picnic) includes great food and entertainment, a procession, and much, much more. This not-to-be missed very special community event celebrates the founding of the City of Monterey in June 1770 when Father Junipero Serra (recently canonized as a Saint by Pope Francis) and Captain Gaspar de Portola celebrated with a picnic overlooking the Monterey Bay. All guests are also welcome to dress in 18th century costume.
Reservations are now open for our free one-hour tours of the Pacific Biological Laboratories (Ed Ricketts’ Lab) at 800 Cannery Row. Tours will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017.
Lab Docents tell the history of the Lab and its pivotal role in the life and work of marine biologist Ed Ricketts and of his friendship and collaboration with author John Steinbeck, and their circle of friends at the Lab, and of the “PBL Members” who bought the Lab in the mid-1950s and were instrumental in the founding of the Monterey Jazz Festival.
Tours feature a scale model of the Lab in the 1940s, created by Bill Johnk. In addition to the tours, there will be opportunities for visitors to purchase copies of books by or about Ricketts and Steinbeck. With the purchase of a book and a minimum $ 5.00 donation, visitors will receive a tax-deductible donation receipt.
Reservations for these popular tours are limited and may be made by contacting the Colton Hall Museum at 831-646-5640. Please provide the following two items for your reservation: your name and phone number. Reservations must be made by Friday, June 9, by 4:00 pm. The best parking for Cannery Row is the Cannery Row Parking Garage at 601 Foam Street or there is metered street parking. Please allow extra time for parking and walking to the Lab. Contact the Museum (646-5640) in advance if, after making a reservation, you cannot attend the tour. The City of Monterey is committed to include the disabled in all of its services, programs and activities. If you require a hearing amplification device to attend an event, dial 711 to use CRS to talk to the City Museums and Cultural Arts Division Office at (831) 646-5648 to coordinate use of a device or for information.
Donations will be accepted to support the City of Monterey’s stewardship of this renowned historic site.
