For decades artists practicing every medium of art have been attracted to Monterey and its surroundings, sculptors, painters, photographers and craftspeople. The list of artists who have worked and lived here is long and impressive; painters Armin Hansen, William Ritschel, Francis McComas , E. Charlton Fortune, Mary Evelyn McCormick, Charles Rollo Peters: sculptors Jo Mora, Wah Ming Chang: photographers, Ansel Adams, Edward, Cole and Brett Weston: cartoonists Eldon Dedini, Gus Arriola and Hank Ketcham, just to name a few.
The attraction to artists continues today and is evident by the hundreds of studios and galleries scattered throughout Monterey County.
There are dozens of galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea, but some of the best collections are in Monterey. The Monterey Museum of Art shows their collections and changing exhibitions at two locations, MMA on Pacific Street and MMA at La Mirada. The Monterey History and Art Association displays artworks with a Monterey connection in the 1845 adobe, Casa Serrano on Pacific Street in downtown Monterey.
The City of Monterey proudly displays their impressive collection of early California in specified areas at city hall, and also displays the work of current artists in juried /rotating exhibitions at the Monterey Conference Center, a brochure “Art Walk” will help guide you through a walking tour of public art throughout historic Monterey.
