WALKS IN AND AROUND MONTEREY |

The Path of History, marked with yellow tiles in Old Monterey sidewalks, and the Monterey Art Walk offer visitors self-guided and self-paced strolls through Old Monterey. They each pass numerous sites of architectural, artistic and historical interest — as well as the convenient restaurants, cafés, shops and hotels of the downtown area. You can download a free MP3 audio tour of the Path of History. If you're short on time, Historic Monterey in Two Hours will guide you to some of the historic places, but invite you back for more later.
The Recreation Trail is a popular route for exploring between Pacific Grove and Monterey and beyond, as bicycles, rollerskates, and four-wheeled surreys seating up to six share the paved path with joggers and walkers. The "Rec Trail" (as it is known to the locals) is designed for fun and exercise, and follows the route of the old Southern Pacific Railroad right of way. (Skateboarders can use the trail from Fisherman’s Wharf northwards towards Seaside, and have their own skate park in El Estero Park.)
